Have you always wondered what your vertical jump measurement is, but never had the access to the proper measuring equipment?
In this article, we will be teaching you a simple method on how to measure your vertical jump at home!
In addition to the method without equipment, we will be showing you guys some cool products later down in this article that can also help you with measuring your vertical jump as accurately as possible.
So, let’s begin!
1) Find a wall.
Find an area of your house with a smooth wall that is high enough that your highest jump cannot reach it.
Make sure that this wall is completely straight, preferably with no baseboard (or one that is not too large), and has a relatively flat ground. Both of these are important to prevent potential injury and to also get the most accurate measurement possible.
A great place would be the side of your house! Similar to the below picture:
2) Find the Materials.
You do not need any special equipment, but you do need two items that you’ll mostly likely have laying around somewhere in your house.
Equipment you will need to measure your vertical jump: measuring tape, and a roll of tape.
If you do not have these, your nearest dollar store will most likely have them available for an affordable price.
3) Measure your Vertical Jump.
Now, follow these 6 simple steps to measure vertical jump at home:
- Rip off a small piece of tape, and stick the piece onto your middle finger.
- Get to the wall as close as possible, and stick the tape as high as you possibly can with your standing reach WITHOUT being on your tippy-toes.
- Get another small piece of tape and stick it onto your middle finger again.
- This time, jump as high as you can and stick it onto the wall as high as possible. Try to align the tape with the first piece as close as you can get it. The more aligned it is, the more accurate your measurement will be. Just like this:
5. Now, measure the distance between the two pieces of tape using your measuring tape.
6. The length of the distance between the two pieces of tape is your vertical jump.
You have now measured your vertical jump at home! Awesome.
Try this out with a few of your friends, to compare who has the highest vertical leap!

What can I use to accurately Measure and Improve my Vertical Jump?
Of course measuring your vertical jump at home using the above method is pretty accurate, but there are limits to not having the proper measuring equipment.
Just like how using a plastic bin for a basketball net is similar but not the same as a real metal net, the same applies to your vertical jump measurement. The plastic bin will definitely work, but you get your shot to be as accurate as possible, the real metal net will give you the best practice.
